The WAR that America and Israel launched on Iran may be over, but Bangladesh remains desperately short of(极度缺乏) power. Its garment factories, especially, have been running low on(快要用完) it. The country’s spinning, knitting and dyeing mills guzzle(大量消耗(资源)) gas and petrochemicals(石油化工产品)—and around 95% of Bangladesh’s oil and gas comes from the Gulf(① 背景:波斯湾(Persian Gul...). Rising costs are squeezing(挤压,压缩(利润/空间)) the businesses. On June 6th Al-Muslim Group, a large clothing exporter, sacked(解雇(大规模)) nearly 1,900 people from its knitwear(针织服装) and denim(牛仔布) factories in Dhaka, the capital.

Over 4m Bangladeshis, mostly women, work in the industry, making clothes for Western brands like Zara and H&M. Around 40m people—25% of the population—depend on(依赖,依靠) it. Clothing made up(构成,占据) four-fifths(五分之四) of Bangladesh’s export earnings last year, and 13% of GDP(国内生产总值). Only China exports(出口(额/量)) more clothes than Bangladesh.
But the sector was already under stress(承受压力). The student-led uprising(起义,造反) that toppled(推翻,打倒) Sheikh Hasina Wajed(① 人物背景:谢赫·哈西娜·瓦吉德(19...) in 2024 also sapped(削弱,消耗) buyers’ confidence in Bangladesh as a reliable partner, explains Mehdi Mahbub, an industry analyst. When Bangladeshis took to the streets(走上街头(抗议)), many garment factories went idle(闲置,停工). Five were set on fire(纵火,放火). Some of the senior Awami League(① 背景:人民联盟(Awami Leag...) figures who were thrown in prison(投入监狱) also owned garment factories. Over the past three years more than 400 of them have shut down(关闭,停业).
