Britons know too well(非常清楚) that their National Health Service often provides poor care: in 2025 only 26% said they were satisfied with it, down from a high of(从高点下降) 70% in 2010. Maternity care is a particularly bleak spot(黯淡之处). A report by Baroness Valerie Amos(瓦莱丽·阿莫斯女男爵,英国政治家。), published on June 30th, concludes that mothers and babies are harmed across England in badly run hospitals incapable(无能力的) of learning from a litany of(一连串(消极事物)) past investigations. But what still shocks are the lies.(但最令人震惊的还是谎言。)
Consider, if you can bear it(如果你能承受得了), the story of baby Harriet Hawkins and her parents Jack and Sarah. It is detailed(详细描述) in a report published on June 24th by Donna Ockenden, a midwifery expert, into the failings(失职、缺点) at the Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) trust between 2012 and 2025. Harriet died just before her birth in April 2016. Her mother had rung the maternity unit, repeatedly and in agony(极度痛苦中), asking to be admitted(请求入院). She was told by midwives that she was “not in labour(未临产)”. It was part of a policy of pressuring women to go home(施压让女性回家), or stay at home, in the early stages of labour. In total, Ms Ockenden concludes, there were nine missed chances(错失的机会) to save Harriet.
What followed was “a systemic cover-up(系统性掩盖) and investigations designed to mislead(旨在误导)”, found Ms Ockenden. Vital information was withheld from the pathologist looking into Harriet’s cause of death. A second post mortem(尸检) was held without the consent of(未经同意) her parents, who happened to work at NUH. A new, supposedly independent(据称独立的) review appeared to have been heavily edited(被大幅篡改) to deflect blame from(转移责任) the hospital. Once, when Dr Hawkins rang the hospital in distress, a secret recording was taken, and later played to others at a meeting.
