CAMBRIDGE, A medieval city 80km (50 miles) north of London, is steeped in(沉浸于,充满) innovation. Its university shaped(塑造,影响) John Milton, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking. A plaque(牌匾,纪念牌) outside the Eagle pub(剑桥著名酒吧,科学史地标) marks where Francis Crick and James Watson announced the discovery of the double-helix structure(双螺旋结构) of DNA. It is the birthplace of in vitro fertilisation(体外受精), the designs that sit in most phones and tablets, and the first humanised monoclonal antibody(全人源单克隆抗体), a technology used to develop three of the world’s five top-selling drugs. Today it is a global hub(中心,枢纽) for life sciences, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
It is no coincidence(巧合) that its successes are echoed(被呼应,被反映) by its American namesake(同名者或物): Cambridge, Massachusetts. Many involved in founding Harvard College(哈佛学院,美国最古老的大学), its famous seat of learning(学府,学术中心) and America’s oldest university, were Cambridge alumni(校友(复数)).In 1638 the colonists(殖民者) renamed the surrounding settlement, founded as New Towne, to honour their alma mater(母校) (and that of the college’s benefactor(捐助者,赞助人), John Harvard).
Today, the American Cambridge has not so much imitated(模仿) its British cousin(表亲(比喻同类事物)) as surpassed(超过,超越) it. Harvard mushes into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)(麻省理工学院,世界顶尖理工院校), another of the world’s best universities. On a curated(精心策划的,由策展人处理的) “innovation trail(创新之路)”, which begins across the Charles river in Boston, various stops celebrate Biogen (one of the area’s earliest biotech companies), Android (an operating system that powers billions of smartphones) and Kendall Square(肯德尔广场,全球生物技术中心), the biotech hub(生物技术中心) dubbed(被称为,授予称号) the world’s “most innovative square mile”.
