Donald Trump likes putting his name on things(把自己的名字挂在东西上), from Manhattan skyscrapers(摩天大楼) (with permission) to Washington’s Kennedy Centre (without). From July 4th Americans have started seeing the president’s name show up in their children’s financial statements(财务报表). Babies born between 2025 and 2028 are getting “Trump Accounts”: $1,000 invested in American stocks, which will be theirs to spend when they turn 18.(2025年至2028年间出生的婴儿将获得"特朗普账户":1000美元投资于美国股票,当他们年满18岁时即可支配。) Some billionaires and big companies have donated top-ups(追加资金), and parents can make their own contributions.
The name is not the only Trumpy thing about the new handouts(施舍物,发放品): they are also partisan(党派性的), grubby(肮脏的,卑鄙的) and funded mostly by borrowing. Only babies who are born from 2025 onward, when Mr Trump returned to the White House, will qualify. Roping in America’s wealthiest to chip in alongside the taxpayer carries a whiff of the cronyism that is sadly too familiar in today’s Washington.(将美国最富有的人拉进来与纳税人一起捐款,带有一丝任人唯亲的味道——这种味道在当今华盛顿可悲地太过熟悉了。)
However, beneath the unsavoury(令人不快的,不体面的) execution there sits an experiment worth watching. The idea of giving children equity stakes(股权) in the economy is sound in principle. It is also well-timed, as societies face up to(勇敢面对) the looming(逼近的,隐约出现的) economic disruption from artificial intelligence.
