Graham Platner’s downfall(垮台,衰落) is somehow both unsurprising and startling. For months Maine’s Democratic nominee for Senate had weathered(经受住,渡过) a stream of(一连串,源源不断) controversies: from a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol to years of inflammatory Reddit posts so prolific(多产的,大量的) that a Maine newspaper created a searchable database of them. In spite of it all he managed to cling on(紧紧抓住,坚持).
Then, on July 6th, Politico reported that Jenny Racicot, a former girlfriend of Mr Platner’s, was accusing him of raping her in 2021. She alleges(指控,断言) that he entered her home without permission and sexually assaulted(攻击,侵犯) her. Mr Platner denies(否认) this.
But on the evening of July 8th, he announced that he was suspending(暂停,中止) his campaign. His selfie video is 11 minutes long and indignant(愤慨的,义愤的): in it he accuses the “corporate media system and the political establishment” of serving as his “judge, jury and executioner(法官、陪审团和刽子手)”.
