NOT FAR from central Stockholm lies Stora Essingen, a sleepy(宁静的,安静的) island covered with lush trees and pretty houses. For years its residents voted overwhelmingly(压倒性地,绝大多数) for the Moderate Party, Sweden’s mainstream conservatives. But since 2022, when the party entered a power-sharing pact with the hard-right anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats (SD), voters have signalled their displeasure at its alliance with the hitherto pariah.(但自2022年该党与强硬反移民的瑞典民主党达成权力分享协议以来,选民们对其与这个昔日弃儿的联盟表示不满。)
Instead voters have shifted towards(转向,转移向) the centre-left Social Democrats, whose activists are knocking on doors(挨家挨户敲门(拉票)) ahead of the general election on September 13th, in the hope that(希望……) it can keep the SD out of the next government. Many voters in places like Stora Essingen view their country as a sensible(明智的,理性的), liberal and cosmopolitan(世界性的,国际化的) democracy. The election will test whether that idea of Sweden wins out(最终获胜,胜出)—or whether, having had a taste of(尝到了……的滋味) anti-immigrant populism, Swedes want more of it.
The SD argues that it has tamed(驯服,控制) (or expelled) its most extreme elements. Its logo, once a blazing(燃烧的,炽热的) torch, is now a blue-and-yellow flower. In the election in 2022, amid anger over(在……的愤怒中) a surge(激增,涌动) in migration a few years earlier, it became the biggest right-wing party in parliament and backed a government headed by(由……领导) Ulf Kristersson, the leader of the Moderates; the SD got policy influence, but no ministerial(部长的,内阁的) jobs. Today Mr Kristersson promises the SD cabinet roles(内阁职位) if the coalition is re-elected.
