“Disappointing” and “shit” was how some attendees summarised the inaugural(首次的,开幕的) CPAC GB conference in Greenwich on July 16th-18th. The event, hosted by Liz Truss, Britain’s shortest-serving(任期最短的) prime minister, was inspired by America’s influential Conservative Political Action Conference. Intended as a show of strength for the new right in Britain, it was an advert for its weakness.(本意是展示英国新右翼的力量,结果却成了其软弱的广告。)
Worse than the empty seats were the empty ideas. If CPAC GB was your introduction to British politics, you would come away thinking that Sir Keir Starmer was a communist and that the country is ruled by a sinister coalition of jihadis and “homo-Leninists” funded by George Soros and the Fabian Society (a left-leaning think-tank increasingly singled out as the force shaping Soviet Britain).(如果CPAC GB是你了解英国政治的入门,你会以为基尔·斯塔默是共产主义者,国家被邪恶联盟统治。)
In principle CPAC exists to provide a platform for conservatives to share ideas. Britain’s instalment(一期,一届) felt more like a Reform UK rally. Its leader, Nigel Farage(奈杰尔·法拉奇,英国脱欧领袖), who pulled by far the biggest crowd, used his platform to slate(抨击,严厉批评) both the Conservative Party and Restore Britain, a breakaway far-right party. But in the foyer disgruntled(不满的,不高兴的) attendees questioned why Tommy Robinson(汤米·罗宾逊,极右翼活动家) and Restore’s leader, Rupert Lowe, hadn’t been invited.
