Eight civilians lay dead(躺卧死亡). More than 80 were injured. Columns of black smoke billowed(滚滚升起) from the wreckage(残骸). On July 18th Ukrainian drones(无人机) hit two giant warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer(零售商), in Moscow and Tambov, some 475km south-east of the capital. The bombs are thought to have destroyed some 150bn roubles(卢布) ($1.9bn) worth of consumer goods. Four days later Ukraine bombed two more warehouses in south-west Russia. One woman was killed.

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, said that soldiers and volunteers use Wildberries to buy military-related goods such as drone components(部件) and bulletproof vests(防弹背心). But he also signalled(发出信号) revenge. The attacks, he said, were a “response to Russian strikes on our civilian infrastructure(基础设施) and on our cities and communities”. They followed strikes on facilities(设施) belonging to Nova Poshta, a Ukrainian postal and logistics company, which Russia says are also used for military purposes.
Ukraine’s attacks on refineries(炼油厂), which have caused fuel shortages across the country, were already bringing the war home(将战争带入本土). The latest strikes further undermine(削弱) the notion(观念) that the fighting will stay confined to the battlefield in Ukraine and drive home(强调,使明白) the Russian authorities’ failure to defend their own people. “Those black columns of smoke have become part of everyday life,” says one Muscovite(莫斯科人). Wildberries has millions of customers. Hundreds of thousands of businesses use it to sell everything from socks to smartphones (not to mention body armour(防弹衣) and fibre-optic cable(光纤电缆)). “The attacks on Wildberries warehouses have affected nearly 100% of the population in one way or another(以某种方式): some physically, some financially, and others psychologically(心理上地),” says Elena Panfilova, a Russian political scientist.
