IT IS A well-trodden path(老路,常见做法): a young man, frustrated with life as an office drone(办公室螺丝钉,单调工作的职员), decides he wants to be his own boss. When he was in his mid-20s, Dave Portnoy came up with(想出,提出) three business ideas: selling used furniture, connecting ambitious high-school athletes with college coaches and setting up a newspaper focused on gambling and sport. He settled on(选定,决定) the third option and the first issue of Barstool Sports hit the streets of Boston, where Mr Portnoy lived, in August 2003. Its motto(座右铭,口号) was: “By the common man, for the common man”.
It has made its founder uncommonly(异常地,非常) wealthy. In 2020 Mr Portnoy made $178m when his investors sold Barstool Sports at a valuation(估值,估价) of $650m. (By then it was no longer a newspaper but a digital media brand with podcasts and merchandise.) He has bought the most expensive home ever sold in his home state of Massachusetts: a compound(庄园,大院) on Nantucket, for $42m. The cover of his boastfully(自夸地,炫耀地) titled book shows him in sunglasses, smoking a cigar in his swimming pool. How did he achieve the American frat boy’s dream(兄弟会男孩的梦想)?
