“I DON’T WANT to go out any more. I stay home most of the time, I want to leave Malaysia so badly(非常、极其).” So says Nur Sadek, a Rohingya refugee and community organiser who arrived in the country from Myanmar nearly five years ago.(努尔·萨德克如是说,他是一名罗兴亚难民和社区组织者,大约五年前从缅甸来到这个国家。) Mr Sadek shares messages from strangers threatening(威胁的) him with violence, some naming places where he can be found. One stranger sent him a video showing a rifle being fired.
Life in Malaysia has never been good for Rohingyas—a Muslim minority viciously(残酷地) persecuted(受迫害的) in Myanmar who have long sought refuge elsewhere in South-East Asia, often arriving in rickety boats(摇摇晃晃的小船). The UN officially counts(统计、计数) more than 100,000 of them in the country, though the true number is doubtless higher. They do not live in refugee camps, but nor do they enjoy many rights. They are not allowed to seek formal employment and their children cannot study in Malaysian schools.
Recently matters have been greatly worsened by a hate campaign(仇恨运动) that has gained strength(增强力量) on Malaysian social media. In May viral(病毒式传播的) posts accused refugees of improper disposal of the remains of animals slaughtered during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha(宰牲节). In June a post falsely claimed that more than 2m babies had been born to couples combining a Rohingya and a Malay (feeding on(利用、助长) old worries that the foreigners are snapping up(抢走、争相获取) local women and having babies who become citizens). Another post pictured a fictitious (AI-generated) “President of Rohingya Malaysia”, supposedly demanding that an entire town be set aside for Rohingyas to live in.(另一个帖子描绘了一个虚构的(AI生成的)“罗兴亚马来西亚总统”,据称要求划出整个城镇供罗兴亚人居住。) The Malaysians who shared that one included the daughter of the deputy prime minister(副总理).
