IT HAS BEEN an action-packed(充满动作的,情节紧张的) year on cinema screens—and at the ticket counter. Five films have already grossed(总收入,获得(票房)) more than $1bn at the global box office(票房;售票处); three more have exceeded $500m. Forthcoming blockbusters(大片,轰动一时的作品) such as “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part Three” promise epic(史诗般的,宏大的) showdowns; crowds are sure to show up to cinemas to watch the battles unfold. Although overall ticket sales are still down from pre-covid levels, analysts predict that the global box office will take $35bn this year, up 7% from 2025.(尽管总票房仍低于疫情前,但分析师预测今年全球票房将达350亿美元,比2025年增长7%。)
Indeed, the picture house(电影院(英式说法)) seems to be enjoying something of a revival, thanks in part to(部分归功于) the younger generations. Many feared that Gen Z and millennials(Z世代和千禧一代) would hasten(加速,催促) cinema’s decline, preferring to stay at home and binge(狂欢,放纵(这里指狂刷)) on Netflix, YouTube or TikTok. But in America nearly 90% of Gen Z went to the cinema in 2025, more than any other generation, according to a survey by Fandango, a ticketing website. They went seven times on average last year, compared with 6.1 times for Gen X and 5.7 for baby-boomers(婴儿潮一代(1946-1964年出生)).
Young cinema-goers are propelling(推动,驱使) films to success. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, released on July 31st, set an opening-weekend record in North America, taking $360m to edge past “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), another superhero flick and the previous record holder.(《蜘蛛侠:崭新的一天》7月31日上映,创下北美首周末票房纪录,收入3.6亿美元,超过前纪录保持者《复仇者联盟:终局之战》。) Almost two-thirds of its opening-weekend(首周末(票房)) audience were 18- to 34-year-olds. The film has now made more than $1.7bn at cinemas worldwide.
