ON August 10th several hundred mostly young people gathered in front of(在……前面) Russia’s Supreme Court. The pavement was covered in chalk messages: “For Yabloko, for peace”; Alexei Navalny(阿列克谢·纳瓦尔尼,俄罗斯反对派领袖)’s slogan “Russia will be free”; and in Ukrainian, “We have no fear, we have love”. They listened on their smartphones to the court’s proceedings, as it decided whether to allow Yabloko (Apple), Russia’s oldest liberal party and the only openly anti-war one, to run in legislative elections set for September 20th.(他们通过智能手机收听法庭审理,法庭正决定是否允许亚博卢参加选举。) The party’s electoral manifesto(宣言;声明) consists of 43 words, the first two sentences in capital letters: FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM! FOR A LIFE WITHOUT FEAR!
Several young people sat in a row(成一排;连续地), eating apples. Someone holding a green apple and a Russian flag was hoisted(升起;吊起) above the crowd. A woman with dyed orange hair sat showily(显眼地;张扬地) reading Kafka. After a few hours the judge, Vyacheslav Kirillov, disqualified(取消资格;使不合格) Yabloko from the elections for the Duma(杜马,俄罗斯议会下院), the lower house of Russia’s legislature. “Whereas previously it was forbidden to speak out against the war, now it is forbidden even to simply speak out in favour of peace,” notes Dmitry Kisiev, a political strategist in Moscow.(过去禁止反战言论,现在连支持和平也不允许。)
The case against Yabloko was a lawsuit(诉讼;官司) filed by Rodina (Motherland), a Kremlin-controlled nationalist party, accusing it of(指控它……) “extremism”. “‘Yabloko are national traitors. They are people who embrace(拥抱;欣然接受) Western values and are demanding our surrender(投降;屈服),” Alexei Zhuravlyov, Rodina’s chairman, said after filing the suit. It also accused Yabloko of copyright violations for using old Soviet pacifist songs and for displaying photos of the bombing of Hiroshima(广岛,日本城市,1945年遭原子弹轰炸), allegedly infringing(侵犯;违反) the copyright of the American army.
