IT WAS CALLED “the capital of the 19th century” and “modern Babylon(巴比伦(象征奢华堕落))”. To those living during the Belle Époque(美好时代(法国历史时期)), which stretched from the 1870s to the onset of the first world war, Paris felt like the centre of the world. And at the very centre of Parisian life were the Cahen d’Anvers, a Jewish banking family. They held salons(沙龙(社交聚会)), threw lavish parties and counted celebrated writers, including Marcel Proust(马塞尔·普鲁斯特,法国作家) and Guy de Maupassant(居伊·德·莫泊桑,法国短篇小说大师), as friends.
The childhoods of the three Cahen d’Anvers daughters were immortalised(使不朽,使永存) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir(皮埃尔-奥古斯特·雷诺阿,法国印象派画家) in commissioned(委托创作的) portraits. One, of Alice and Elisabeth holding hands (see picture), hangs in the Museu de Arte de São Paulo(圣保罗艺术博物馆). It looks as though everything about the girls’ lives, save their ruffled dresses(除了她们带褶边的裙子), was smooth. In fact, the painting “reminds us that nothing and no one is quite safe from the hands of time or the evil within humanity, apart, sometimes, from art itself”, writes Catherine Ostler, a historian, in a new book.(事实上,这幅画“提醒我们,没有什么和没有人能完全逃脱时间的魔掌或人性中的邪恶,有时,除了艺术本身”,历史学家凯瑟琳·奥斯特勒在新书中写道。)
