The world’s top business schools have long debased(贬低,降低身份) themselves by selling certificates to anyone with a computer and some spare cash. Punters(顾客,主顾) can even pay $699 to be coached by AI-generated professors at Harvard Business School. Yet an even cheaper (and similarly prestigious) crash-course(速成课程) on business is available at the sports faculties of Amazon College and the University of Netflix(讽刺亚马逊和奈飞提供教育内容).
Sports documentaries are not generally considered part of the management canon(经典,准则). While Clayton Christensen(颠覆性创新理论提出者), a famous business thinker, was writing about “disruptive innovation” in the mid-1990s, British television produced “Graham Taylor: An Impossible Job”, a bleak(阴郁的,无望的) portrait of England’s national football manager. In 2005 a pair of INSEAD professors told bosses to go after “blue ocean(蓝海战略,开创无竞争市场)” markets in a bestselling book. Neil Warnock, another English football manager and the ascetic(苦行僧式的,禁欲的) hero of the documentary “Warnock”, told his players before a match: “By all means(当然可以,务必) enjoy it, but enjoy it by being fucking disciplined.”
Nowadays it is business schools that have run out of(用完,耗尽) big ideas and dressing rooms that seem to be full of them. After the pandemic-era success of “Drive to Survive(F1赛车纪录片,奈飞热播)”, a Netflix show following Formula 1 racing teams that is now up to its ninth season, and “The Last Dance(迈克尔·乔丹纪录片)”, a ten-parter about the Chicago Bulls' 1997-98 basketball season, streaming platforms decided that viewers’ appetite(胃口,欲望) for touchline philosophy was unlimited.
