BIOGRAPHICALLY, the two men could not be more different. One is a worldly(世故的,老练的) Venezuelan polyglot(通晓多种语言的人), the son of a champagne communist(香槟共产主义者(指生活奢侈的左派)) who named him and his brothers after a “hero” of the Soviet revolution(苏联革命(指1917年俄国革命)). The other was the son of a violent refinery worker; he grew up in a shabby(破旧的,寒酸的) one-bedroom house in south-eastern Texas and volunteered for Lyndon Johnson’s presidential campaign. The former became the most notorious terrorist of the 20th century and is living out the end of his days(度过余生) in a prison outside Paris. The other cycled through(接连经历,轮番更换) jails, wives and multiple personae(人格面具,身份(persona的复数)) before dying, overweight and alone, in a nursing home near Dallas in 2020.
