Against animal testing
Regarding your leader(社论;主要文章) on bipartisan(两党的;获得两党支持的) opposition to the use of animals in experiments, animal protection has always been supported by both parties (“Bipartisan and wrong”, August 8th). Decades ago PETA(善待动物组织) worked with Bob Dole and Bob Smith, Republican senators, as well as(也;和;除…之外) Alan Cranston, a Democratic senator, and Joe Biden when he was a senator. And so it has been through the years.
What is different now is that we have 15 years of scientific data showing the failure of animal use to lead to treatments for humans.(如今的不同在于,我们有15年的科学数据表明动物实验未能带来人类疗法。) Abhorrent experiments, from full-body irradiation(辐射;照射) of monkeys used in HIV studies to the strangulation(勒死;扼杀) of rats to simulate domestic abuse to inducing strokes in beagles, are a colossal(巨大的,庞大的) failure. A staggering(令人震惊的,巨大的) 95% of medications developed in animals fail in clinical trials. The HIV-vaccine research you tout(吹捧;兜售)ed by the Oregon primate(灵长类动物) centre proves the point: 40 years of killing monkeys, who don’t even develop HIV, has led to dozens of test vaccines. But only five have made it to clinical trials, and every one failed. Failure rates for treatments tested on animals in other research areas mirror this disaster: 100% failure for sepsis(脓毒症) and for stroke, 99.6% failure for Alzheimer’s disease, and so on.
