TROJAN HORSES seem to be everywhere this summer. Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, has featured(以……为特色,重点展示) one in a campaign video for Israel’s parliamentary election on October 27th. In the ad, an AI-generated(人工智能生成的) Gadi Eisenkot, a former general now leading the polls(民意调查,投票), rides the horse. Lurking inside are Mansour Abbas and Yair Golan, two other opposition leaders.(潜伏在马腹中的是另外两位反对党领袖曼苏尔·阿巴斯和亚伊尔·戈兰。)
Mr Netanyahu’s message is crude(粗鲁的,粗糙的)—and clear: Mr Eisenkot can win only by joining forces(联合,合力) with Mr Abbas’s Arab-Israeli Ra’am party and Mr Golan’s Zionist-left Democrats. Yashar, Mr Eisenkot’s centre-right party, has overtaken(超过,赶上) Mr Netanyahu’s Likud in The Economist’s poll tracker. But he will need to woo a range of partners to form a government—as will Mr Netanyahu.(但他需要争取一系列合作伙伴来组建政府——内塔尼亚胡也是如此。)
Mr Eisenkot’s growing popularity among centre-right voters, Likud’s constituency(选区,选民群体), is unsettling(使不安,扰乱) Mr Netanyahu’s party. Hence it is trying to taint Mr Eisenkot by association(通过关联,因连带关系). Smearing the Arab parties, which represent over 20% of Israel’s population, is an old tactic. Mr Netanyahu has repeatedly labelled them “terror supporters” and accused Ra’am of being an offshoot(分支,衍生物) of the Muslim Brotherhood(穆斯林兄弟会,伊斯兰组织) (though he has not been above(不屑于,不耻于) trying to elicit(引出,诱出) Mr Abbas’s support when desperate).
