The jury is still out on whether Mayor Zohran Mamdani, with his commitment to “the warmth of collectivism”, will summon(召唤；召集) a new era of plenty for struggling New Yorkers. But his young administration is already a gift to one constituency(选区；支持者群体): conservative readers of the city’s tabloid, the New York Post, which is affirming their opinion of the left by feasting upon(尽情享用；大肆渲染) the privileged lifestyles of some of Mr Mamdani’s fellow travellers(同路人；同党) in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The Post later reported that Mr Gordillo, the co-chairman of the city chapter of the DSA, studied art and literature at Yale; that he was fired from an electricians’ union apprenticeship programme for failing to show up; and that his mother drives a silver Porsche.

Other leftist piñatas(皮纳塔；攻击目标) for the Post have included Tracy Rosenthal, who advocates abolishing(废除；取消) rent and whose father is a successful music producer. (“Anti-rent radical and Mamdani pal who is ‘squatting’ in Brooklyn is Grammy nepo baby(星二代；裙带关系受益者)”.) The Post has branded(给…贴上标签；污蔑) Grace Ryan, “a 25-year-old chocolate heiress(女继承人) from Ohio”, as “one of the most shameless” members of the DSA for posting pictures of herself on social media “puffing a cigar(抽雪茄) on a boat in a $400 Ralph Lauren stars-and-stripes sweater”. To the Post’s unmistakable glee, Ms Ryan, who worked during the primary for a successful left-wing congressional candidate, defended herself on X by writing, “Like have y’all never heard of noblesse oblige(贵族责任；位高则任重)?”
