UNIVERSITY STUDENTS have long delighted in fashionable slang. Now their administrator(管理者，行政人员)s are joining in. Earlier in the year the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign renamed its Office for DEI to the Office for Access, Civil Rights and Community.

Behind this linguistic makeover(改造，翻新) lies a Republican-led crackdown(严厉打击，镇压) on DEI at public universities. Since 2023 state lawmakers have introduced more than 150 bills targeting campus diversity programmes, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education(美国高等教育领域的权威专业媒体). Donald Trump, who has called DEI “un-American”, has added to the pressure by issuing orders dismantling DEI programmes in the federal government and threatening to withdraw funding from universities that embrace them.(唐纳德·特朗普曾称DEI“不美国”，他通过发布行政令解散联邦政府中的DEI项目，并威胁削减拥抱这些项目的大学的经费，进一步加大了压力。) The campaign has yield(产生，取得)ed legislative(立法的) results: 34 bills in 19 states have become law.
