Really big political donations have long been rare in Britain. Only a few dozen people have ever handed a gift of(赠送了……的礼物) £1m ($1.3m) or more to a party. But that seems to be changing. On September 11th and 12th the populist-right Reform uk revealed that Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, both crypto entrepreneurs, had given the party £36m each.(9月11日和12日,右翼民粹政党“改革英国党”披露,加密货币企业家本·德洛和克里斯托弗·哈伯恩分别向该党捐赠了3600万英镑。)
They insist they are not motivated by personal gain(个人利益). Mr Delo says he supports Nigel Farage, Reform’s leader, because his autism makes him hostile(敌对的、反感的) to “lying politicians”. Mr Harborne backs Reform because he fears “existential threats” including climate change (oddly, since Mr Farage thinks that is no big deal).(哈伯恩支持改革英国党,是因为他担心包括气候变化在内的“生存威胁”——这有点奇怪,因为法拉奇认为气候变化没什么大不了。)
The size of the gifts—more than all donations made last year to every political party combined—has caused angst(焦虑不安) among Reform’s opponents. The government has already announced plans to tighten existing legislation, including by restricting the amount that Britons living abroad (which until recently included Mr Delo and Mr Harborne) can give to £100,000 a year.(政府已宣布计划收紧现行法规,包括将居住在国外的英国人(直到最近,德洛和哈伯恩也属于此类)的年度捐款上限限制在10万英镑。) Some parliamentarians wish to apply that cap to all donors. They also want the law to take effect(生效) retroactively(追溯地), which could force Reform to return its windfall.
