Jamaica has more churches per square kilometre(每平方公里) than anywhere else in the world. Two-thirds of the population identify as(自认是) Christian. About the same share calls the church their most trusted institution, according to a survey conducted in 2025 for a human-rights group, Jamaicans for Justice.(2025年人权组织“牙买加人争取正义”委托进行的一项调查显示,大约同样比例的人认为教会是他们最信任的机构。) Just a fifth say the same about the government.
Much of what the church preaches(宣扬,布道) is socially conservative. In 2013 it led large protests against the overturning(推翻) of anti-sodomy laws(反鸡奸法). In 2019 it marched against the legalisation(合法化) of abortion. Both times it prevailed(获胜,占上风). But there is one issue on which Jamaica’s clerics(神职人员) sound ever more progressive: climate change.
Increasingly dangerous weather is the main cause for concern(令人担忧的原因). In 2025 Hurricane Melissa, having drawn energy from a warmer Caribbean Sea, tore across Jamaica taking down most of the electricity grid, damaging water systems and telecommunications infrastructure.(2025年,飓风梅丽莎从变暖的加勒比海汲取能量,席卷牙买加,摧毁了大部分电网,破坏了供水系统和电信基础设施。) It also killed 45 people. Garth Minott, the Anglican Bishop(圣公会主教) of Kingston, says the church responded faster than the government, connecting wealthy donors with needy parishioners(教区居民) to provide building materials and get reconstruction going(启动重建). Ocho Rios Baptist Church on the country’s north coast led three separate relief missions(救援任务).
