THE WHEELS of justice turn slowly. But on September 22nd, more than seven years after suicide-bombings in churches and luxury hotels killed 269 people on Easter Sunday, 2019, a Sri Lankan court convicted and sentenced 15 people to between 200 and 260 years in prison. Nine others were acquitted(宣判无罪). The three judges summarised their 2,000-page judgment to a packed courtroom, as paramilitary(准军事的) police patrolled outside.

Yet the rulings have not satisfied the Catholic church, victims’ families or survivors, who say their fight is not over until the maha molakaru(僧伽罗语“大脑袋”，指幕后主使) (“great brain” in Sinhala) is brought to justice(绳之以法). Among the dead were 171 Catholics. And the church will “surely, surely” keep up the pressure(继续施压), insists Jude Krishantha Fernando, a Catholic priest and spokesman.

The Islamic State-inspired attacks on three churches and three hotels were carried out by members of a home-grown group, National Thowheed Jamath(斯里兰卡本土伊斯兰极端组织). The suicide-bombers were led by Zahran Hashim, a preacher from Sri Lanka’s east, who detonated(引爆) his explosives at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo. In one of the country’s biggest-ever criminal prosecutions, the attorney-general in October 2021 indicted(起诉) the accused, the bombers’ alleged accomplices(涉嫌同谋), on 23,270 charges.
