The death star was nearly 100 miles from side to side and could attract people’s attention by blowing up their planets. The new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded in Los Angeles by George Lucas, the creator of “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones”, is more modest in size and uses gentler methods to woo(争取,博取(支持)) eyeballs. Still, at 300,000 square feet (28,000 square metres) and with a reported price tag(价格标签;造价) of $1bn, it is one of the most conspicuous(显眼的,引人注目的) and intriguing(引人入胜的,令人好奇的) museums to launch this decade anywhere in the galaxy. But will Mr Lucas’s blockbuster project, which opened on September 22nd, be remembered as an inspired creative endeavour or an expensive and flawed edifice complex?(但卢卡斯这部于9月22日开馆的“大片”级项目,究竟会被铭记为一次充满灵感的创意壮举,还是一座昂贵而有缺陷的“建筑情结”纪念碑?)
It is an unusual institution(机构;制度). Outside, the museum resemble(像,与……相似)s a white spaceship destined(注定要去的; destined for 开往) for another solar system. Inside, it looks like a prop-heavy Hollywood set designed to look like a museum.(从里面看,它又像一处道具堆砌的好莱坞片场,被刻意布置成博物馆的样子。)
There are screens displaying digital copies of masterpieces held elsewhere, from Trajan’s column(罗马图拉真柱,古代叙事艺术典范) to Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel(西斯廷教堂,米开朗基罗壁画所在地) and works from the Louvre. There are two plush(豪华的,舒适的) cinemas where visitors can watch documentaries and older films, including some of Mr Lucas’s work. There is a “portal”—otherwise known as a lobby—with no right angles and futuristic glass lifts that shoot you up to the galleries.(还有一个“传送门”——其实就是门厅——里面没有直角,未来感十足的玻璃电梯载着你直冲展厅。)
