An election is a few months away, in February, but Mr Bukele has little to fear from(几乎不必担心) the vote. Since Salvadorans first put him into office seven years ago he has pack(塞满，安插)ed the constitutional court with allies, abolish(废除，取消)ed presidential term limits, reduced the number of municipalities from 262 to 44, shrunk the legislature(立法机构，议会) from 84 seats to 60 and redrawn electoral districts—all to his benefit. Plus he remains genuinely popular. But he would rather face voters on the back of(凭借，依靠) fresh successes. The president wants to be seen as “a guru(宗师，权威) on transforming societies”, says one analyst in El Salvador, who asked not to be named.

The targets of this transformation are education and health care. The deployment(部署，运用) of artificial intelligence is key. Last year Mr Bukele launched a pilot(试点，试验项目) in 171 schools using Grok(马斯克旗下xAI开发的聊天机器人), a chatbot made by Elon Musk’s xAI, to help teach children. Grok acts as a tutor(导师，辅导教师) in maths, science and reading, working at the pupil’s own pace(按学生自己的节奏). A teacher supervises. Similar experiments are under way(在进行中) elsewhere—Colombia has piloted Meta’s chatbots in rural areas—but officials say El Salvador’s is the first attempt at a full national roll-out(全面推广，推出). Mr Bukele is expanding the scheme(计划，方案).
