On a sodden(湿透的) road in Portadown, Northern Ireland’s first minister stood defiantly(挑衅地,公然违抗地). Sinn Féin(爱尔兰民族主义政党新芬党)’s Michelle O’Neill knew she was acting in contravention of(违反,与……相抵触) the law because she’d been in Belfast’s High Court the previous evening where judges rejected an attempt to prevent the Orange Order(新教兄弟会组织橙带党), a Protestant fraternal organisation, marching where they are unwelcome. Sinn Féin’s vote will almost certainly now rise; Northern Ireland’s devolved government at Stormont(北爱尔兰议会及权力下放政府所在地) may well fall.
There are hundreds of Orange marches each year in which men in bowler hats(圆顶硬礼帽) walk behind bands and banners. Most are relaxed affairs, but a handful(少数,一把) which pass through mostly Catholic areas are viewed by residents as triumphalist(凯旋主义的,炫耀胜利的) expressions of Protestant domination. The deadliest parading dispute of the 1990s was at Portadown’s Garvaghy Road(加瓦吉路,北爱尔兰游行争议焦点). When that parade from Drumcree Parish Church(德拉姆克里教区教堂,游行起点) was stopped, there were province-wide road closures, rioting and murders by Protestant paramilitaries(准军事组织).
For almost three decades, the march has been blocked. But this year the Parades Commission(游行委员会), which regulates marches, agreed to let 35 Orangemen(橙带党成员) march in silence(沉默地,静默地) early on September 27th, without any flags or supporters.
