ANDY BURNHAM addressed his party’s conference in Liverpool as a heretic(异端分子). He had come, he said more than once, to say what none of his predecessors(前任们) dared. He was “an outsider from the Westminster club”. He would be “the first prime minister to make a break with(与…… Forty years of consensus? Shattered. “I have to break the mould(打破旧模式) today,” he said.
And heresies, it seemed, were spoken. He railed against(痛斥) privatisation. He broached(触及、提出) taboos: electoral reform, loosening the state pension’s “triple lock(养老金三重锁定)”, rejoining the European Union. The verdict was rapturous(狂喜的、热烈的), for Britain is tired of stasis(停滞) and hungry for change.
Greater scepticism is in order(是合适的、应当的). This is a golden age for the faux(假的、伪的) heretics. The biggest podcasters (think Jordan Peterson, or Owen Jones) present as dissidents while offering views that are often bland, crowd-pleasing or even dominant.(最火的播客主(想想乔丹·彼得森或欧文·琼斯)以异见者自居,兜售的观点却往往平淡无奇、迎合大众,甚至就是主流。) So with Mr Burnham. The big ideas that propel him are wearily familiar, shared among most of the six prime ministers who have governed Britain in the past decade. Policies recur word for word. Mr Burnham is less a heretic than a keeper of the new orthodoxy(正统观念), “post-liberalism(后自由主义)”.
