THE FIRST meeting in a decade between an Israeli prime minister and a Palestinian president was a historic scene. The smiles looked real. But the encounter was not. Gadi Eisenkot is the front-runner(领先者,最可能获胜的人) in Israel’s election, not the country’s prime minister. And he has yet to meet(尚未见面) Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinians’ ageing(年迈的,年老的) ruler.
The realistic-looking footage(视频片段,影像资料) of the faux(假的,伪造的)-summit purporting(声称,自称) to show Mr Eisenkot embracing Mr Abbas was produced by Religious Zionism, a hard-right(极右翼的) party led by Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s finance minister and an ally of Binyamin Netanyahu, its prime minister. It was aimed at convincing voters that Mr Eisenkot, a tough ex-general hoping to replace Mr Netanyahu in Israel’s parliamentary election on October 27th, is actually a dangerous left-winger prepared to reconcile with Israel’s enemies.(视频意在让选民相信,艾森科特——这位希望取代内塔尼亚胡的强硬派前将军——实际上是个危险的左翼分子,准备与以色列的敌人和解。)
Fake though it was, the video still made history(创造历史). On July 26th it became Israel’s first campaign ad to fall foul of(违反,与……冲突) a law that requires all such materials created using artificial intelligence to be labelled(标注,贴上标签) as such. The Central Election Committee (CEC) ordered Religious Zionism to take it down(将其撤下,删除).
