Uppermost in the minds of American commanders who ordered around a dozen B-1 bombers to leave their temporary base at RAF Fairford on October 4th was the fear of an Iranian plot to attack them with drones.(10月4日,下令约十余架B-1轰炸机撤离费尔福德皇家空军临时基地的美国指挥官们,最担心的是伊朗策划用无人机袭击这些飞机。) J.D. Vance, America's vice-president, said the decision sprang from an "abundance(大量,充裕) of caution". It came after President Donald Trump claimed to have had intelligence of a specific threat. "They didn't fly out by accident," he said.
Britain gave the Americans permission(任务,使命), soon after the Iran war began in February, to fly "defensive" missions from Fairford and other bases against targets such as Iranian missile launchers. In July Iran threatened that "any base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory is a legitimate(合法的,正当的) target for our forces"—a threat the British took seriously, and for good reason. Their intelligence services reckon(认为,估计) Iran has been behind a growing number of attempted "hybrid" attacks in Britain.
Ukraine's extraordinary(非同寻常的,非凡的) Operation Spiderweb(乌克兰"蛛网行动"), in June 2025, showed how quite vulnerable(脆弱的,易受攻击的) airbases can be. The Ukrainians smuggle(偷运,走私)d more than 100 quadcopter drones deep inside Russia, then used them to destroy as many as 14 irreplaceable(不可替代的) bombers and reconnaissance(侦察) aircraft. Ever since, air forces everywhere have feared copycat attacks(模仿性袭击). In August an attempted drone attack on Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig airport, attributed to Russia, very nearly succeeded.
