When Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin-Madison accepts his Nobel prize for physics later this year, he will enjoy the rare privilege of an undivided(完整的,未分割的) spotlight. Most physics laureate(获奖者,桂冠诗人)s must share the stage(分享舞台,共同获奖) with a collaborator or rival. Dr Halzen will be the first since 1992 to claim(获得,赢得) all the glory for himself.
The prize citation(获奖评语,引文), unveil(公布,揭幕)ed on Tuesday, credit(把……归功于)s his “decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory”, a particle detector span(横跨,覆盖)ning a cubic kilometre of ice near the South Pole which draws on the efforts of 450 researchers in 14 countries. But, according to Ulf Danielsson, a physicist at Uppsala University and secretary to the Nobel committee for physics, “Without his scientific vision, it would have been impossible.”(但据乌普萨拉大学物理学家、诺贝尔物理学奖委员会秘书乌尔夫·丹尼尔森所说:“没有他的科学远见,这一切都不可能实现。”)
Detecting neutrinos requires scientific vision in spades(大量地,非常). Being electrically neutral (hence the “neutr-”) and physically diminutive (hence the “-ino”), they are, in effect, immune to both the electromagnetic force and gravity, allowing them to pass through most particle detectors unobserved.(中微子不带电(故有“neutr-”),体积极小(故有“-ino”),实际上对电磁力和引力都免疫,因此能穿过大多数粒子探测器而不被察觉。) Their dealings with regular matter are largely limited to interactions via the aptly(恰当地,贴切地) named weak nuclear force.
