A RAMPANT SPECIES has taken over(接管,占领) the urban jungles of Latin America. Small, noisy and remarkably good at squeezing into tight spaces(挤进狭窄空间), motorcycles have found the crowded streets of Bogotá, São Paulo and Mexico City an accommodating(乐于助人的;适宜的) habitat. They swarm(蜂拥,成群移动) between cars at traffic lights, crowd pavements and are the trusty steeds(忠实的坐骑) of delivery riders.
They are also multiplying(迅速增加,繁殖) fast: annual motorcycle sales across the region doubled from 3m in 2019 to almost 6m last year. In 2010 there were just five registered motorcycles for every 100 people; by 2024 there were 14. Mexico’s motorcycle fleet(摩托车保有量,车队) more than quadrupled(翻了两番,增长三倍) in the decade to 2025, from 2.6m to 10.5m.

Motorbikes are a cheap and easy way to weave(穿行,迂回前进) through horribly congested(拥堵的) cities. As public transport has failed to keep pace with(跟上……的步伐) rapid, and often informal, urban sprawl((城市)无序扩张), motorcycles have filled the gap(填补空白). Their buyers are disproportionately(不成比例地) young, poor and male. Many work as couriers(快递员,信使). Brazil had 351,000 motorcycle gig workers(零工经济从业者) in 2024, 66% more than two years earlier. In Mexico an industry group estimates that seven in ten motorcycles sold in 2023 were bought for work, including for deliveries and for use as motorcycle taxis.
