To the uninformed(不了解情况的) palate(味觉;口味), pindakaas(荷兰花生酱) is simply peanut butter. But some Somalis in Leicester, a city in the English Midlands, prefer the Dutch product. Jars of imported pindakaas can be bought in corner shops around the run-down(破旧的,失修的) St Matthew’s housing estate, near the city centre. So can Dutch oatmeal, Dutch vanilla sugar and condiment(调味品)s such as kruiden ketchup and romige fritessaus.
同样能买到的还有荷兰燕麦片、荷兰香草糖,以及 kruiden ketchup(香料番茄酱)和 romige fritessaus(奶油蛋黄酱)等调味品。
The Somalis of St Matthew’s developed a taste for(养成对……的喜好) such foods in the Netherlands, where many were refugee(难民)s. They gained Dutch citizenship then migrated to Britain under EU freedom-of-movement rules(自由流动规则). They are part of a large, diverse population of ethnic-minority Europeans in the country. Often overlooked(被忽视的), this population challenges British assumption(假设,想当然的看法)s about immigration and Europe.

The Migration Observatory(牛津大学移民观察站), a think-tank(智库) at Oxford University, estimates that some 800,000 ethnic-minority(少数族裔的) people in Britain hold EU passports. Most come from “old” European countries, such as France, Italy and the Netherlands, rather than the “new” countries that joined the union after 2003, such as Lithuania and Poland. Young Western Europeans in Britain are startlingly(令人吃惊地) diverse (see chart).
