Millennials, born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s, had a brutal(残酷的) coming of age(成年、长大成人). Many graduated in the wake of(在…… 而来) the global financial crisis. Youth unemployment rose above 50% in some parts of Europe, leading to talk of a “lost generation”. Living with their parents and deprived(被剥夺的、缺乏的) of the prospect of owning a home, they were lectured by unsympathetic(缺乏同情心的) elders not to spend so much money on brunch.
Today millennials, aged around 30-45, have dramatically turned their fortunes round. They earn more than any other recent generation did at the same age, and are catching up in terms of home-ownership(住房拥有率、自有住房). At the same time, millennial-era culture is enjoying a revival in television, music, gaming and even fashion, where their notoriously tight trousers are cool once again.(与此同时,千禧一代的文化正在电视、音乐、游戏甚至时尚领域复兴,他们那出了名的紧身裤又一次变得时髦起来。)
Some of this is simply the way of the world(世事常态、人之常情). As generations age, they get better jobs, earn more and buy homes. Millennials are not the first lot(一群人、一批人) to reach middle age and revive the culture of their youth. The 1970s witnessed a 1950s revival, with a rock'n’roll renaissance(复兴、再度流行), “Happy Days” and “Grease”(70年代怀旧50年代的两部代表作). In the 1990s bell-bottoms and tie-dye emerged from the back of wardrobes. Nostalgia reliably runs on a two-decade timetable.(怀旧总是可靠地以二十年为一个周期。)
