It is fashionable in certain circles to dismiss(不予理会,摒弃) the catastrophic(灾难性的) risks of AI. One often hears that “the real experts” who work on the technology every day are really not concerned at all; that only “doomers” and “luddites” espouse(支持,拥护) a “fringe(边缘的,非主流的)” view from a “position of ignorance”; that all talk of potential catastrophe is just “science fiction(科幻小说)”.
Fortunately(幸运的是), an open letter has been published(发布,发表) that lets us hear from the real experts who work on the technology every day, in their own words. And are they worried? Very.
The letter states: “There is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates(加速) beyond our ability(超出我们的能力) to understand or control the resulting systems.” It asks the US government to support “an international effort to develop the technical and governance(治理,管理) tools needed to deliberately(故意地,审慎地) pace(为…设定节奏) the frontier of automated AI development”.
