There is probably no word that has been more used and abused(滥用) in the last decade than “woke”. It has been rendered(使成为) completely meaningless, but it refuses to die. Indeed, it has now taken on new life(获得新生): in the past week, there’s been a flurry of(一阵,一连串) headlines about “Woke 1.0” or “Woke One”. If you haven’t seen the phrase pop up(突然出现) in your newsfeed yet, it will soon.
在过去十年里,可能没有哪个词比“觉醒”被使用和滥用的次数更多了。它已经被弄得完全失去了意义,但它拒绝消亡。事实上,它现在又获得了新生:在过去一周里,关于“觉醒1.0”或“觉醒一代”的标题层出不穷。如果你还没有在你的信息流中看到这个短语,那么你很快就会看到。
So what is this cursed(被诅咒的,可恶的) phrase? There’s no official definition, but the term is largely being used to refer to the period between 2018 and 2021 when social justice language was at its peak(处于顶峰) in mainstream culture. Certain progressives, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have started to use “Woke 1” disparagingly(轻蔑地), as a way to distance themselves from(与……保持距离) that period and signal that they stand for a new form of left-leaning politics that is more palatable(合口味的,可接受的) to centrist Democrats. “Woke 2”, I suppose.
那么这个被诅咒的短语是什么意思?没有官方定义,但这个词在很大程度上被用来指2018年至2021年期间,当时社会正义语言在主流文化中达到顶峰。包括亚历山德里娅·奥卡西奥-科尔特斯在内的一些进步派人士已经开始轻蔑地使用“觉醒1.0”,以此与那个时期保持距离,并表明他们支持一种更受中间派民主党人欢迎的新型左倾政治。“觉醒2.0”,我想。
We can blame the New York City councilmember Chi Ossé(纽约市议员,创造“Woke 1”一词) for coining(创造(新词)) the phrase. Back in May, he wrote on X: “Woke 1 was crazyyyy.” This was in response to someone reminding him that, in 2021, he’d said: “A cis(顺性别的) white man should not be the next speaker of the Council.”
我们可以责怪纽约市议员Chi Ossé创造了这个短语。早在五月,他在X上写道:“觉醒1.0太疯狂了。”这是回应有人提醒他,在2021年,他曾说过:“顺性别白人男性不应成为市议会下一任议长。”
