Dr Reese Richardson’s phone constantly buzzes(发出嗡嗡声) with notifications. The scientific research integrity specialist has been tracking shadowy(神秘的,隐蔽的) organisations known as “paper mills”, which turn a profit(盈利,获利) by offering fraudulent(欺诈的,欺骗性的) academic authorship of scientific papers, IP registrations and other scholarly(学术的,学者风范的) outputs.
For a fee, paper mills offer to list people as authors of scientific journal articles, often of falsified(伪造的,篡改的) research that bypasses the peer review process(绕过同行评审流程).
Richardson has joined dozens of(几十个,许多) groups across apps such as Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook where a buffet(自助餐,大量供应) of fraudulent and fabricated(捏造的,伪造的) research is advertised to hundreds of members. “I can just look through(浏览,翻阅) my notifications and I can see that I’ve gotten, like, 20 WhatsApp messages from paper mills in the last 24 hours,” he says.
