Hello, TechScape readers! Danielle Abril, editor of the Guardian’s Reworked series on AI and the future of work, filling in for(临时替代某人) Blake Montgomery this week. Major legal battles against Meta over child safety are playing out(逐渐发生、展开) in courts across the US – and the tech giant is losing. Recent rulings(裁决、判决) raise big questions about social media companies’ responsibility to their youngest users. Meanwhile, more key executives have jumped ship(跳槽、离职) from Google as it battles OpenAI and Anthropic in the race for AI dominance, and Meta’s smartglasses face a fearsome backlash. Let’s dig in(让我们开始吧)!
Meta latest legal loss piles on the pressure as child safety concerns grow
Meta
The pressure on social media giants including Meta is mounting(不断增加的), as courts work through(处理、解决) a growing pile of cases and deliver devastating(毁灭性的), expensive rulings, one after another. Meta’s repeated losses underscore how serious the child safety crisis has become for social media companies and may force them to change how they operate to avoid further costly legal exposure.(Meta的屡次败诉凸显了儿童安全危机对社交媒体公司的严重性,并可能迫使其改变运营方式以避免更多法律风险。)
The latest blow(打击、挫折) came last week, after a New Mexico court hit Meta with(对Meta施加(处罚)) an order to pay $567m into a teen mental health fund to remediate(补救、纠正) the harm its platforms have caused children. The penalty adds to the $375m fine already on the court’s books(记录在案的) after a jury determined in March that Meta negligently(疏忽地) permitted damage to children’s mental health and hid what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its platforms. In a Los Angeles court, also in March, Meta was held liable for $4.2m in damages for designing platforms that addict and hurt children.(同样在3月,洛杉矶一家法院裁定Meta因设计令人上瘾且伤害儿童的平台而需承担420万美元损害赔偿。) The California case paved the way for(为…铺平道路) hundreds of plaintiffs(原告) who have filed similar cases, which could cost Meta billions and force major changes to its products.
