Nirmal Purja made his name(成名，建立名声) in environments where life is reduced to its most elemental(基本的，原始的), and dangerous, terms. He believed, with an almost evangelical fervour(带着近乎传教士般的热情), that “with relentless(不懈的，持续的) self-belief, anything is possible”. He spent his life testing the limits of that belief, first in military service and later on the world’s highest and most dangerous mountains. He has died aged 43 in an avalanche(雪崩) on Broad Peak, an 8,051-metre mountain in Pakistan.

His ambitious, no-holds-barred(毫无限制的，不择手段的) approach to high-altitude climbing brought a new emphasis to the world’s highest peaks, prioritising speed, visibility and multiple back-to-back(连续的，一个接一个的) ascents within a single season. His methods helped propel(推动，驱使) Himalayan mountaineering into the influencer age, reshaping the way people saw, and climbed, the world’s tallest mountains. He was also an astute(精明的，敏锐的) self-promoter, frequently broadcasting his climbs and exploits(英勇事迹，壮举) from the high camps themselves.

In a relatively short climbing career, Purja amassed(积累，聚集) a remarkable collection of records. Among them were fastest ascents of multiple 8,000-metre peaks, the highest number of ascents of the world’s 8,000-metre mountains by a single climber (57), and the highest number of 8,000-metre ascents without supplemental(补充的，额外的) oxygen (29). In 2021, he also achieved one of mountaineering’s most coveted(令人垂涎的，梦寐以求的) feats(壮举，功绩): the first winter ascent of K2(乔戈里峰，世界第二高峰), the world’s second-tallest peak, alongside nine fellow Nepali climbers who sang the Nepali national anthem together as they reached the top. Purja was the only member of the summit team to climb K2 without supplemental oxygen.
