When Chris McCausland won Strictly Come Dancing(英国广播公司热门舞蹈真人秀) in 2024, he held his trophy aloft(高高地;在空中) and said: “It’s for everyone out there that thought and got told they couldn’t do something. It just shows with opportunity and support and determination(决心;坚定), anything can happen.” Later that month, he delivered Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message(第四频道另类圣诞致辞). In it, McCausland warned that Access to Work (AtW), a scheme run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), was under threat(受到威胁) due to a lack of funding.
AtW provides grants(补助金;拨款) to employers and self-employed workers to cover the cost of reasonable adjustments(合理调整(残障人士工作便利)) a disabled person may need in the workplace. Behind McCausland’s jovial reflection on the value of different mince pies was a heartfelt plea to protect this little-known yet vital cog in our national machine.(在麦考斯兰对不同肉馅派价值的轻松调侃背后,是一个恳切的呼吁:保护这个鲜为人知却至关重要的国家机器齿轮。)

Like Chris, I cannot do what I do without support. I am visually impaired(视力受损的) (I have 5% vision) and I am a television writer. I’ve worked on shows such as Sex Education, Call the Midwife and The Hack(英国知名电视节目). I am currently working on a drama for BBC One about the newspaper editor Harry Evans. My job is my passion, my obsession(痴迷;执着), my livelihood and a huge part of my identity. But thanks to(由于;多亏) recent cuts to my AtW support, it has become increasingly difficult, if not impossible(插入语,表示让步“即使不是不可能”), for me to perform.
