August has brought us a referendum(全民公投) on “Woke 1” – a term that reductively(简化地,贬低地) brands 2020’s social justice movement – as prominent liberal voices reflect on(反思,回顾) that time period with disappointing hindsight(事后聪明,后见之明). During a recent appearance on ABC’s This Week, when asked about 2020-era demands to abolish(废除,取消) prisons and police, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the US congresswoman from New York, abandoned(放弃,抛弃) her previous support of the “defund the police(撤资警察(运动))” movement, and instead joked: “Woke 1 was crazyyyyy.”
Ocasio-Cortez, a democratic socialist(民主社会主义者), implied that the still-resounding(响亮的,巨大的) calls for municipalities(市政当局,自治市) to reduce police budgets and to divert(转移,转向) aid to poor communities were worth advocating for during the 2020 uprising, but are now “crazyyyyy”. In 2020, she noted that “a lot of people cannot fathom(理解,弄清) what an abolitionist(废除主义者(此处指废除监狱警察制度)) America looks like. Tell them it looks like a suburb. Affluent(富裕的) white communities already live in a world where they choose to fund youth, health, housing more than they fund police.” But she has since backtracked on(背弃,出尔反尔) that idea.
On 9 August, she told This Week co-host Jonathan Karl: “We all share the goals of having as low a crime rate as possible [but] rhetoric(言论,花言巧语) in that time is not rhetoric that we would use today.” Days later, Zohran Mamdani, the progressive New York mayor, echoed(附和,重复) her sentiment by surmising(推测,猜测): “Sometimes, what you believe can change and develop.” But their reversing course(改变方向,转向) on abolition isn’t development; it’s a devolution(退化,倒退).
