It’s 10am on one of the main pedestrian(行人的;步行的) shopping streets in Warrington, and already there’s a queue(队列;排队) of women outside a small bus the size of a supermarket delivery van. While some look calm, others are visibly(明显地;可见地) nervous. This is no mobile library, post office or coffee truck – but one providing far more intimate(私密的;亲密的) services: cervical screening(宫颈筛查).
The bus feels surprisingly spacious(宽敞的). There’s a consultation(咨询;磋商) area with room for the nurses, patients and anyone accompanying them to talk. Behind it, a separate room holds a bed, room to get changed(换衣服) and storage for all the clinical(临床的) equipment. Purple lighting, smart decor and spa music add to the minimalist(极简主义的) ambience(氛围;环境).
Catherine, 26, is the first in the queue. She has never had cervical screening before. She says the fact that it is a bus, with people she doesn’t know, persuaded her to go ahead with it.(她说,巴士这一事实,以及车里都是陌生人,促使她决定接受筛查。) “I didn’t go for screening before because there’s only one nurse at my doctor’s and she’s my asthma(哮喘) nurse,” Catherine says. “So it felt too familiar(熟悉的).”
