Meta has taken a “don’t ask, don’t tell(不问不说,指故意回避问题)” strategy when it comes to the safety of children on its social media platforms, according to a whistleblower(举报人,内部爆料者) who testified during a landmark trial(里程碑式审判,具有重大意义的案件) against the company on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Arturo Béjar, a former Meta safety engineer, told the jury that the company was aware of the harm its products caused children, which included its recommendations pushing content from sexual predators and violent and graphic images.(Arturo Béjar作证称公司知晓其产品对儿童的伤害,包括推荐性侵犯者内容和暴力图片。) He said he repeatedly(反复地,一再地) raised the issue to various Facebook and Instagram executives but that they did little to(几乎没有做任何事来) resolve it.
In his testimony, Béjar said his job often included him briefing(向…做简报,简要汇报) Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, on product issues. He estimated(估计,估算) that he spoke to the CEO at least 100 times. One email Béjar sent to Zuckerberg in 2021 showed the engineer warning of constant reports(不断的报告,持续不断的举报) of harmful content and damage to teenage wellbeing on Facebook and Instagram. Béjar said he emailed Zuckerberg after the CEO publicly said the company doesn’t prioritize profit over safety(将利润置于安全之上).
