The deadly H5 bird flu that has devastated(摧毁,严重破坏) wildlife populations globally since 2021 is spreading across Australia.
The federal government announced the first vaccination plans for captive(被圈养的) native bird species last week and the Victorian government has moved to(已着手,已采取行动) vaccinate wild little penguins after the first detections in terns on Phillip Island(菲利普岛,澳大利亚著名企鹅栖息地). On Saturday, the state government announced the death of a little penguin on the island, the first confirmed(确诊的,证实的) case of H5 bird flu in the species.
But for those who don’t live in communities in southern Australia on the frontline of the highly pathogenic virus, the possibility that they will at some point see the severe consequences of H5 bird flu for native birds might not have registered.(但对于不住在南部前线社区的人来说,他们可能尚未意识到会看到严重后果。)
