As people gather in Amatrice on Monday for a mass to mark the 10th anniversary of the earthquake that struck the hilltop town and several neighbouring communities, killing 303 and leaving thousands homeless, politicians and other public figures will pay tribute.(当人们聚集参加纪念弥撒时,政要将致哀。)
But for many, their words will offer little comfort: 10 years on, much of Amatrice, whose historic centre was wiped out by the 6.0 magnitude(震级;巨大) quake, is still being rebuilt and more than half of its roughly 2,100 residents continue to live in temporary housing.
“They will make a good show of it(大做表面文章), bow their heads and say: ‘We did a lot,’” said Sonia Santarelli, the president of Comitato Civico 3e36, a grassroots(草根的,基层的) initiative established soon after the disaster. “But nobody will put their neck on the line(冒风险,承担责任). They will say the reconstruction is going well … but how can that be when so many are in homes that are uninhabitable(不适合居住的)?”
