Good morning. To international onlookers, Pedro Sánchez appears to have achieved(似乎已经实现) the impossible. Where other European leftist and left-ish premiers have flopped(失败，惨败) and flailed(挣扎，胡乱挥舞), the Spanish PM has endured.

Since June 2018, Sánchez has ruled from Madrid, implementing a raft of(大量的，许多) progressive policies. More recently, he has emerged as a leading, and often lone, left-wing European voice on the global stage, striking a defiant(挑衅的，反抗的) tone on everything from the Trump administration’s war in Iran (“the smokescreen(烟幕，障眼法) of war to hide their failure”) to Israel’s actions in Gaza (“exterminating(灭绝，根除) a defenceless people”). The fact that the international press has nicknamed him El Guapo(西班牙语绰号，意为“俊俏者”) (the handsome one) can’t hurt.

At home, however, it’s a more complex story. Sánchez’s inner circle(核心圈子，亲信集团) is in the midst of a damaging corruption scandal, and polling has his traditionally centre-left Spanish Socialist Workers’ party (PSOE) faltering(动摇的，衰退的). Meanwhile, recent scenes in Ceuta and apocalyptic(世界末日的，灾难性的) wildfires throw up(产生，带来) thorny policy challenges. European leaders have publicly turned on(攻击，反对) Sánchez – and this is with a general election looming(逼近的，迫在眉睫的) next year.
