Sarah Williams vividly(生动地,清晰地) remembers the night in 2016 when she camped overnight in a car park to put down a deposit(支付定金) on a flat in the newly completed Spectrum Building in Dagenham, east London.
“People started queuing(排队) for those flats 24 hours before they went on sale,” she said. “It was basically the only flat I could afford in London. This was a year before Grenfell(格伦费尔塔火灾), and the flats market in London was completely crazy(疯狂的,极不正常的).”
Four years later, her flat became unsellable(无法出售的) when they realised it was covered in dangerous, flammable(易燃的) cladding(覆层,外墙装饰板). Another four years and it, like Grenfell Tower in west London in 2017, had burned down.
