The United States once led most other nations on resettling(重新安置) refugees from all over the world. But in the fiscal year(财政年度) 2025- 2026, except for three people from Afghanistan, all of the 10,258 people admitted(被接纳,被准许进入) through resettlement were white South Africans.
But admitting en masse the beneficiaries of South African apartheid, while simultaneously cancelling temporary protected status (TPS) for 350,000 Haitians, and making a spectacle of detaining and shackling them, is just the tip of the racist iceberg: the Trump administration is reportedly using this moment to double the initial resettlement support that refugees receive to $4,500 per person.(但大规模接纳南非种族隔离受益者,同时取消海地人的临时保护身份并公开羞辱他们,这只是种族主义冰山一角:特朗普政府正借机将难民初始安置补助翻倍至4500美元。)
As an expert on resettlement, I have been advocating for(主张,提倡) years for an increase in resettlement support. In 2022, I wrote a book showing the inadequacy(不足,不充分) of existing systems of support, and even consulted(咨询,请教) for the office of refugee resettlement on the issue.
Yet, when the refugees weren’t white, the advocacy was not heard.
