Twenty years ago, Pluto got demoted(降级,降职). After a vote by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in August 2006, Pluto was relegated(降级,使降位) from major planet to dwarf planet status. Our solar system dropped from nine planets to eight. At the time, many scientists were unhappy with the decision. Two decades on, the debate is, if anything(如果说有变化的话), even more polarised(两极分化的).
“The definition of a planet they created, you can’t use it at all,” says Philip Metzger, the director of the Stephen W Hawking Centre for Microgravity Research and Education at the University of Central Florida.(“他们创造的行星定义,你根本没法用,”菲利普·梅茨格说。) “It makes the definition of a planet completely non-useful(无用的,没用的) in science.”
Metzger is one of a number of scientists and lay people(外行,非专业人士) who consider Pluto’s demotion a big mistake.
