I am sorry that Dr Paul Sagar experienced his injury, but grateful for his moment of enlightenment(顿悟,启发) (The big idea: Could this policy fix the care system and slash student debt at the same time?, 30 August). It is the sort of suggestion that family carers such as myself have been making for years, having been failed by the statutory services for decades.(这正是像我这样的家庭照护者多年来一直在提出的建议,而我们几十年来一直被法定服务机构辜负。)
It needs backing up(支持,支撑) with some infrastructure(基础设施): more special schools, more special colleges, better provision(提供,供给) in mainstream schools for children with special needs via smaller class sizes, and through more care villages/intentional communities(志趣相投的社区) with accommodation, not only for those needing care and support but also for the staff and volunteers on the same site, and housing for family carers.
For our family, enlightenment came more than 60 years ago when my younger brother was born deafblind(聋盲的) with additional complex multiple disabilities. When my parents asked the authorities which special school he could attend, the reply was devastating: there was nowhere in the north of England that could cope with the severity and complexity of his disabilities.(当父母询问当局他可以去哪所特殊学校时,回答令人绝望:英格兰北部没有一所学校能应对他残疾的严重性和复杂性。) My parents were left in despair.
