There are common non-negotiables(不可妥协的条件) we look for in a prospective(未来的;潜在的) partner. They should be kind, caring and thoughtful. Having a shared interest helps. So does remembering important dates and anniversaries.(记住重要日期和纪念日也同样重要。) But how much does it matter if they know how to pronounce the word “gnocchi(意大利土豆丸子)”?
我们在寻找潜在伴侣时,有一些常见的不可妥协的条件。他们应该善良、体贴、周到。有共同的兴趣爱好会加分,记住重要的日期和纪念日也同样重要。但如果他们不知道如何发音“gnocchi”这个词,这又有多重要呢?
Turns out that’s a potential dealbreaker(导致分手的关键问题), at least according to a (rather judgy(爱评判的,挑剔的)) cohort(一群人,群体) on TikTok. See: the “Illiterate Boyfriend” trend, which is testing some couples on the app. Users have compiled a list of what are essentially SAT words for women to ask their male partners to read. Many of these men – this is an overwhelmingly heterosexual activity – fail to finish the list unscathed(毫发无损的). They trip over(被…绊倒;读错) entries such as “hyperbole”, “cynicism”, “diaphragmatic” and the oft-butchered(经常被读错的) French term, “hors d’oeuvres”.
“I want you to do your best to pronounce these words,” one woman asks her boyfriend in a clip viewed more than 8.8m times. He gamely(勇敢地,顽强地) nails(成功完成) his first attempt, reading off the herb “thyme”. But he’s less successful with “epitome(典型,缩影)”, “challah(白面包(犹太教))” and “fuchsia(紫红色;倒挂金钟花)”. (“Foo-chia?” he guesses). “Conscientious” and “faux pas(失礼,失态)” also prove tricky. He ends up with a score of five out of 17, or 29% – very much a failing grade.
“我想让你尽力读出这些单词,”一位女性在观看次数超过880万的视频中要求她的男朋友。他勇敢地成功完成了第一次尝试,读出了香草“thyme”。但他在“epitome”、“challah”和“fuchsia”上就不那么成功了。(“Foo-chia?”他猜道)。“Conscientious”和“faux pas”也被证明很棘手。他最终得了17分中的5分,即29%——绝对是不及格。
