Good morning. Over the weekend, rescue workers in Nepal and Tibet raced to find people who are still trapped(被困的) in villages affected by catastrophic(灾难性的) flash floods. As of this morning, the death toll(死亡人数) stands at 903, and more than 4,000 people are missing.
For those of you reading this in a place where life continues as usual, the scale of devastation(破坏,毁灭) is hard to fathom(理解,弄清). In a matter of minutes, a torrent(急流,洪流) of mud and debris engulfed(吞没,淹没) entire villages, snapped bridges and swept away people’s homes and families. Some survivors are marooned(被困的,孤立无援的) on top of buildings that rescue workers can’t reach. Others are trapped in tunnels beneath the ground. Many have no idea if their loved ones are still alive.
The floods exemplify(是…… The delicate(微妙的,脆弱的) processes that have shaped our climate for centuries are unwinding(瓦解,展开) at a terrifying pace(以可怕的速度). Scientists are still investigating the precise(精确的) sequence(顺序,一系列) of events that caused these floods, but as the planet heats up and glaciers melt, events like this will keep happening.
